most/all 1.44MB disks are actually 2MB disks, the extra space is usually
used for the overhead of the filesystem. i remember tools for dos called
2M (i think) that could turn a 1.44MB formatted floppy into a 1.88MB or
if you felt daring i think it could go to 1.93MB.
so available space is dependent on the system ..
