    You can just remove the xdm symlink from whatever runlevel you're running,
or pick one and then change runlevels to that. Look in /etc/rc?.d for the
details on all the runlevels.
    As for gnome...

    echo "gnome-session" > $HOME/.xinitrc should do the trick...
