grub and a partition table problem

After swapping some drives around I ran grub a few times and now have a
situation where W98 cannot read and data on its 2.5G partition (hda1). I
can "cd C:" ok but if I try to read any data I get the "abort, retry,
fail" message.

But when I run Debian from hda5 I can mount hda1 and read the files, no
trouble at all.

Another odd thing is that I ran "fdisk /mbr" but on boot it still finds
and runs the grub menu which is on sda5.

I'd really appreciate some hints on how to recover hda1.
