Have a close look at cupsys (best installed with "apt-get install
cupsys-bsd", woody version recommended), Debian's packaging of the
"Common Unix Printing System" (see <http://www.cups.org/>).
It has a web interface to customize your printer settings, browsing
capabilities which let you see your networked printers 30 secs after
installing them via cups, and lets you print 2 or 4up without any
other programs.
Works great in our computer lab and at home.
