This is how I have done it:
1. "tzconfig" to set the time zone
2. edit /etc/default/rcS to include "UTC=yes"
3. date --set="<the-local-time-and-date>"
4. "hwclock --utc --systohc" to set the hardware clock to GMT
I usually use the same format spit out by "date" for
<the-local-tame-and-date>. e.g.,
date --set="Wed Sep 20 00:29:36 MDT 2000"
but there are (lots of) other formats that will work, check the manpage.
