ehm, you want to install GNOME? i suggest, that you use the uptodate
Helix GNOME. just add:

deb ftp://spidermonkey.helixcode.com/distributions/debian unstable main

to you sources.list; and install the package 'task-helix-core'. this
will install you a very nice GNOME Desktop. well, it uses Sawfish as
Windowmanager, but, if you like, you can install englightenment, too.
BTW: theres also the task-helix-gnome, which installs you very much
GNOME tools.

if i dont have Helix GNOME in my sources.list, the following
task-gnome-* packages are available:

$ grep "^Package: " /var/lib/dpkg/available | grep task-gnome
Package: task-gnome-net
Package: task-gnome-games
Package: task-gnome-desktop
Package: task-gnome-apps
