potato install -> unmet mysql dependency?

i did a fresh format/partition/install of potato from iso/cd install;
after poking around a bit* i found that mysql needed zlib1g-dev
(zlib.h i think) and even though
	apt-get check
reported all was lovely, i had to manually
	apt-get install zlib1g-dev
anyhow.

is it a bug? is it me?*

*"poking around a bit" entails many apt-get install and apt-get remove
while i find the arrangement i'm after...
