MySQL and root password

Hi,
I'm having a hard time even getting Mysql to change the root password the way that debian recommends.
when I type :
mysql -u root mysql
I get the response :
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO)

Now, this happens when I am the normal user or root... same messgae. This is also off a fresh install of MySQL... So what am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your time,
Jack
