i had a similar problem. is solved it with "chmod 3777 /var/mail".
this is possibly not very clean, but it works.
-- yes, my /var/spool/mail is 755, root mail
so mail could have trouble writing it,
I'll chmod g+w it and see what happens.
I wonder how such permissions got installed wrong?
