Installation Problem

I'm trying to install Debian Linux on a Gateway 5233 MMX running Windows
98, but my hard drive is not being detected. I have one Quantum
Fireball 3079 MB hard drive. All partitions are FAT, and my c:
partition was originally 1028 MB before I split it 326.8MB/700.9MB by
running fips at a DOS prompt. I have the following files in a
subdirectory on c: base2_1.tgz, drv1440.bin, install.bat, linux,
loadlin.exe, resc1440.bin and root.bin.

When I run install.bat from this subdirectory at a DOS prompt, my hard
drive is identified as hde with partitions hde1 and hde2. However, once
I reach the Debian GNU/Linux System Installation Main Menu, I'm told
that no hard disk drives could be found.

The install.bat file invokes the following command: load linux
root=/dev/ram initrd=root.bin.

What am I overlooking? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
