What are your specific problems with X-Windows?
Try running the xf86config setup program from the initial
console; have the specifics for you card/monitor/mouse ready.
A ps/2-mouse is generally on /dev/psaux.
I believe there's X-Howto out there; try searching e.g.
AltaVista for it...
