Telnet IS working, but obviously you aren't running a local SMTP server (this
is what you are trying to telnet to!!). Fetchmal also needs a local SMTP
server to be able to feed you the messages it just downloaded.
I recommend you to install "Exim", far superior to the old mail daemon
"sendmail."
