suggest you do something like:

launch minicom
configure it to talk to your modem
hit ATZ (you should see it reply 'OK')
then hit ATM=0 (it sohuld reply 'OK')
then hit AT&W (again it should reply 'OK')

exit minicom

that should turn off the speaker.  check your modem documentation, or see
