I've found it very helpful to to get the Contents-i386.gz file and
look thru it every now and then.

ftp.somewhere.org/path-to-debian/dists/unstable/Contents-i386.gz

prompt> zgrep libm.so.5 ~root/Debian/Contents-i386.gz
lib/libm.so.5                                   oldlibs/libc5
lib/libm.so.5.0.9                               oldlibs/libc5

I.e. get libc5 in the oldlibs section.
