X freezes, keyboard error?

Hi

I just ran an upgrade on the potato packages (as I do every night) and got a
lot of new packages. Everything seemed to be fine until gdm started. X froze
and I was unable to change to another console. I decided to remove gdm from
another machine and start X from xinit. It froze again. I killed X from the
other machine and came back only to find out that my keyboard had changed into
something garbled, only Ctrl+Alt+Del worked... :(
After reboot I tried X again and agian I killed it from the other machine. I
went back tried the ketboard - nothing good. Back the remote machine where I
issued a kbd_mode which returned raw. Ahhh something in X changes the keyboard
mode from ASCII to raw.

Now I'm not a wizard when it comes to X so I would like to know where I can
change this behaviour? Do I have to get the source and recompile?

A quick answer would be much appreciated
