X->Console Scrambles 'box' characters

Hi,

I am stumped...

I have two machines: 1) SVGA: chipset: cyberblade, and 2) S3Virge.

On machine 1, when I switch from X to console, all of the 'box'
characters are corrupted. (I am refering to the pretty outline
characters that you get after typing: make menuconfig or the arrows
that occur after enabling threading when using mutt). The characters
are fine before starting X, but become a random set of bits after
starting X and switching back to console. The alphanumeric characters
[a|A..z|Z] & [0..9] are unchanged.

On machine 2, updated with the same set of packages as 1), the 'box'
characters do not become corrupted.

Typing 'reset' under terminal mode doesn't help. I have also tried
reinstalling packages such as ncurses. Could half of the
display controller's character map have become corrupted (ie hardware
bug / design stupidity)?

I am using xfree-3.3.5-2 (potato). Does anyone have any ideas?

Regards,
Mark.
