Network slowness
Hi,
I seem to be having a problem with my network. I've just installed a
Linux box running slink, and have a nice 3C905 100TX card in it to connect
to my network here at work. But, the network seems to be slower than
molasses. When I use dselect to run apt and update the file lists, I get
a whole string of 404 not found errors. So I switched to using ftp as my
access method. Well, I've been trying for three days to update about 10
packages. The ftp download goes like molasses and I get a whole bunch of
FTP errors.
I've set up my gateway address (I think) correctly, and my nameserver is
right (I'm pretty sure).
So, on to my cries for help:
1) Any ideas as to what I could try to make my connection to the network
faster?
2) We have to go through an HTTP proxy for http access. I know that I can
set the procy and port in the apt.conf file--what do I put if the proxy is
an automatic one (which means I don't know what port it is)?
Thanks
