My experience was that KDE insists on xdm being installed, so I removed the
startup links for xdm with

# update-rc.d -f xdm remove

as root of course.

I could have also just edited the script so xdm would not start.
I did likewise with the kdm script.

If kde is not installed, xdm can be removed, I believe.
