A suggestion I have for situations like this is to have compiled in
support for the "Magic SysRq" key in your kernel (it's like the last
option presented in any of the make *config methods. Then read the
documentation in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sysrq.txt. It will allow
you to send messages straight to the kernel to sync disks, read-only
remount disks, kill all procs on the current VT, etc. It's incredibly
useful. It usually works even when Ctrl-Alt-Del or Bs don't work.
