There's your problem... ;-)   (Further discussion should be held in
alt.religion.emacs).

But, honestly.

Whithout trying to pretend I got the foggiest what the problem might
be, I would suggest to runt "ps -A" and "top" to see what might cause
problems. Also starts killing ("kill PID" and if that doesn't work
"kill -9 PID") user processes. Since non-graphic program works it
might be an X issue. (How come you can run xterm but not startx?!)

If some process does not dies it might be that one hogging the
system.

If all else fails, try a reboot. Does it solves the problem?

Probably not. It is probably "just" some file missing/being corrupt. I
had some *very* strange problems until I found out that /bin/sh was
missing. Check errormessages on startup if something like that might
be the problem.

Do you get any errormessages?
