mounting cdrw

I am using Debian 2.1 upgraded to potato, with the 2.2.13 kernel.
I have installed a Ricoh MP7060A CD-R/RW as the master on my second
IDE controller. It replaces a cdrom player that was identified as
/dev/hdc. I am able to burn cd's successfully. However, since I want
to use cdr's to backup my files, I need to be able to mount the
Ricoh to be able to transfer files to my machine in case of emergency.

I have recompiled my kernel 4 times, each time with no success.
I have used make clean after make dep.
As per the how-to's, I have enabled scsi-emulation, scsi cdrom support,
generic scsi support and have at various times completely disabled
atapi cdrom support, and then enabled atapi cdrom support as a module,
which is not mounted at boot.

When I attempt to mount my cdr as /dev/scd0, I get an error message that
the kernel does not recognize /dev/scd0 as a block device. However when
I ls -l /dev/scd0, it shows up as:
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Dec 8 21:34 /dev/scd0

Am I missing something obvious? (I have a talent for that.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Les
