You don't have to use pid files.  Just kill it using:

 start-stop-daemon --stop --oknodo --quiet --exec $DAEMON

where $DAEMON is whatever path+name you used to start it.

(There are of course lots of packages dump-mode UPS monitors.  I
like and have packaged powstatd.  Slinkified version available at
http://www.debian.org/~psg/powstatd_1.3-1slink0_i386.deb)
