My printcap, that works for remote printing, looks like this:

lp|huiac|lj|HP Laserjet 6MP:\
        :lp=:\
        :rm=huiac:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
        :af=/var/log/lp-acct:\
        :lf=/var/log/lp-errs:\
        :pl#70:\
        :pw#80:\
        :pc#150:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:

Maybe specifying 'lp=/dev/null' is getting your work thrown away before
lpd notices you've specified a remote printer?
