I removed all the postgresql packages (purged them) and then removed the user
"postgres" from /etc/passwd.  Then, I installed postgresql and it actually did
not cause any errors this time, so I believe the removal of the user
"postgres" did the trick.

The deb package just recreated the user, as I thought it would.
