http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch3.html#s3.7 describes how
backspace and delete are to behave:
	<-- 
	     delete the character to the left of the cursor 

	Delete 
	     delete the character to the right of the cursor 

X conforms to this policy, provided you are using the X KeyBoard extension.
Make sure you do /not/ specify XkbDisable in /etc/X11/XF86Config .
