The things that the instructions left out that I had to do was the
following:
After recompiling, type "make modules" in the kernel source dir
loading soundcore with "insmod soundcore"
then finally "insmod emu10k1.o" where that is appropriate emu10k1 file
copied to the correct directory, as per the instructions.
