I've found that although XEmacs seems to think auto-compression is on
it doesn't work unless I toggle it off and then on again, eg.:
M-x auto-compression-mode
M-x auto-compression-mode
The first turns it off, the second back on again. After that I'm
golden and can read *.gz files just fine.
