Latest update broke my system

[Lets see if this goes to the list. I've tried to subscribe but
something might've gone wrong - don't get any mails (the newsgroup
linux.debian.user is non-empty so I think the list is alive). (Haven't
contact list-adimn yet.) Hence my Mail-copies-To - i.e. please cc me.]

On Thursday I updated my system via
dselect/ftp/ftp.uk.debian.org/unstable to update those packages that
has been update since last (a couple of weeks ago).

A lot of the packages generated errormessages (something I deduced was
due to broken files - it happend before with the tar_xxxx.deb).

The when I shortly afterwards (didn't understood the errormessages
entirely) shutdown my system I got some errors from shutdown/init. I
rebooted and when init boots it complains of "cannot execute
/etc/rc.d/rcS", gives login prompt but I can't log in. No passwords
are recognized (I think it's PAM that complains).

Trying boot disk didn't help (not very surprising).

1. What's wrong? I can't tell you what errormessages I'd got (I did log
the dselect-run with script) nor can I tell you what is FUBAR since
   I can't log in.

2. I will give the resucedisks a try - how do I use 'em?

Reinstalling the entire system is not an option.

The irony of it all was that I was planning to do a backup of a lot of
files to a cdr tomorrow...

/Jonas, with a f*cked up debian system.
