i'll answer the second question first: yes, the mount point must exist.

As for the first, would it be feasible to put everything in the second
drive in a sibdirectory (e.g. /share/share), and share that directory.
samba should give an error when the drive isn't mounted, as long as the
mountpoint doesn't contain a 'share' subdir. Of course, i haven't tried
this, so it may not work.
