Possibly it's an error in the config files, or perhaps the mailer isn't
being run from init.d/inetd properly. It would help if you could
copy-paste the exact error messages to the list, and tell us which mailer
you're using (exim/sendmail/smail/qmail/etc...)

As a test, can you telnet to port 25? "telnet localhost 25" or "telnet
www.xxx.yyy.zzz 25" (try both)
