gdm not authorized to connect

Hi there,

maybe a silly problem: After new installation of potatoe from scratch, i
would like to use gdm for graphical logins instead of xdm (which already
worked)
So i threw out any S??xdm out of my /etc/rc2.d and tried to start up
gdm.
Unfortunalety i only got a nice blank X-Screen without any gdmgreeter od
gdmchooser and even could not switch to a text-console.
After logging in from remot, i found the following under
/var/state/gdm/:0.log

so, obviously i have some authentifacation problem. Has anybody an idea
or solution. Normaly i think this should not happen, so others would
not have posted problems with logging off gdm...

thanks a lot for any help
