Well, that layer 3 switch probably has a much higher backplane bandwidth
than PCI has so that is likely where the money is going. (I am rather fond
of the Lucent P550 Cajun layer 2/3 switches/routers myself).
Note that the Adaptec cards go for anywhere from US$450-$600 depending on
source. VA Linux will supply them with their machines as will other
vendors. The cards are pretty long so make sure the case you choose can
accept them. Many of the 1U and 2U units will not handle the cards because
the area forward of the card slot is obstructed by power supplies or fans.
We have one of these units in production and will be rolling out three
more and so far have had no troubles (touching wood) with 2.2 kernels.
They do not seem to work at all with 2.0 kernels though because of the
PCI bridge on the card (I suspect).
