I also switched to Debian from Redhat about 18 months ago and
never regretted it. 

May I respectfully suggest that if you are new to Debian you'd be
better off not trying to install unstable stuff at the beginning.
The very fact that it's called "unstable" tells you that it's
likely to break things!

I'd say you should concentrate on gettin slink up and running,
which is pretty easy, and only when you've used it for a bit try
the unstable stuff if you really want to. Personally, I'm holding
off for the present.
