this is possible (actually i did something similar yesterday :-):

mke2fs /dev/hda2
mount /dev/hda2 /mnt
cd /mnt
cp -axv /* .
edit /mnt/etc/lilo.conf and change hda3-s to hda2-s
insert a floppy into drive0 and:
cp /vmlinuz /dev/fd0
rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/hda2
reboot
lilo

that's it!! :)
