What does "~/.xsession-errors" say? Try to start up a fail safe
session and run wmaeker from the xterm with "gdb wmaker" (or possibly
"gdb /usr/bin/X11/WindowMaker-{gnome,debian,kde}"), enter "r" at the
resulting prompt and after the crash enter "bt" for the backtrace.
