Misspelling 'nameserver' won't keep you from connecting, but it will make
it hard to surf the net. Also, you really should have two nameservers.

That is an appropriate entry for /etc/ppp/pap-secrets, not for
/etc/chatscripts/provider but you don't need it as you are not using PAP.

You have not told us what command you are running (I'm guessing you are
just typing 'pppd').
In any case, this is all a waste of time. Put ppp back the way it was by
reinstalling ppp with 'dpkg -i ppp' and run pppconfig. You will then be
able to bring up a ppp connection with 'pon' and stop it with 'poff'.
