Weird ls/dir behavior in vfat partition

Hi all.
I just upgraded a bunch of packages from 2.0.36 to 2.2.10 kernel (Did not
install glibc2.1, left it at libc2.0.7 latest version, upgraded all
packages needed for 2.2.10 kernel and ones suggested in the kernel readme
file.)
I just tried to access my windows partition. The root of it (just cd
/Winpartition) works fine. I can ls and see all the files and directories
there.
However, if I try ti go one level lower (any directory , or 'folder' :),
and ls there, I get some weird output, like this:

./li: No such file or directory
ls: drom/son.ycd: No such file or directory
ls: les/2.0..34/: No such file or directory
ls: odules/2..0.: No such file or directory
ls: /modules./2.: No such file or directory
ls:
/lib/mo.dul: No such file or directory
ls: odules/2..0.: No such file or directory
ls: ip_masq_.cus: No such file or directory
ls: /2.0.34/.ipv: No such file or directory
ls: /lib/mod.ule: No such file or directory
ls: 4/ip_mas.q_f: No such file or directory
ls: /2.0.34/.ipv: No such file or directory
ls: ib/modul.es/: No such file or directory
ls: :

/lib/.mod: No such file or directory
ls: 34/misc/.pcw: No such file or directory
ls: 0.34/mis.c/p: No such file or directory
ls: /2.0.34/.mis: No such file or directory
ls: /modules./2.: No such file or directory
ls: /modules./2.: No such file or directory
ls: o: /lib/.mod: No such file or directory
ls: util.o

Doing dir in the same directory gives me this output:
Scorpio:/windows/files# dir

What have I broken? It worked fine until I upgraded to 2.2.10.....
I can access a pure dos partition just fine, and read direcotires in
there.

TIA,
  Andrew
