I will give a specific instance.  I need gtk 1.2 but when I try to install the
libgtk 1.2 deb, it complains that it needs libc6 2.1.1.  I was unable to
install this gtk from source because during 'make install' it complains that
the deb is already installed.  I tried removing the deb for gtk, but then dpkg
complains that it is required for other packages I installed.  In order to
install libc6 2.11 I need to also upgrade to the potato version of ld.so and
some other things.  I tried this and it broke my timezones.  I was fortunate
to have been able to go back to the older libc6 with only small breakages
which I fixed.

I just have to wait until Potato is stable, and if it will run on 2.0.x
kernels, I will upgrade, or else, learn to set up ipchains and upgrade the
kernel too.
