In order to install Linux you need to have an ext2 file system partition.
If you have a blank HD , you can fdisk it, create several partitions, and
then put ext2 file system on those partitions that you need.
As for having Win on one disk, nad Linux on another, it's no problem.
Windows can sit on the primary master and don't say a word, and you can
safely boot into linux that is located on any other disk. Just make sure
that your / is within first 504M of your hard drive (for old BIOSes, at
least).
Usually when you fdisk and create several partitions on that disk, you get
rid of some data. If you have a blank disk, and it has some data, which
you dont want to lose, what you can do is repartition your drive with FIPs
(FIPs, isnt it?), so that you don't lose any data in partition process.

As for WINdows, sorry. Are you asking whether you can install Windows on a
disk without formatting it? I oon't think so. But you can install Linux on
a system with Windows in it, even on the same disk, it is possible. Then
use LILO to dialboot your computer.
