Hi Anthony,
I've used StarOffice, WordPerfect8 and strings for
reading/converting Word docs on my Linux systems. StarOffice works ok and
thats about it. I find StarOffice tends to screwup any Word doc that uses
any amount of formatting (ie damn near ANYTHING with tables and such).
WordPerfect8 works! I have yet to have it fail to open any Word doc. It is
also much nicer than StarOffice IMHO ... uses less resources, opens really
quick, and handles all kinda of file types with little problems. If you
have a word doc that you simply have to read quickly use 'strings'. It's
easy and fast to convert and read right away. 'strings file.doc >file.txt'
Hope this helps.
