NIS is a method of managing a domain from a central server invented by Sun
Microsystems. You have a central set of configuration files that are
"pushed" to NIS servers which service queries for the information from
client machines.

You might, for example, have your password and group files distributed by
NIS. In this way, you make a change on a single machine and push the new
files out to the servers. Now, when you log in to a machine in the NIS
domain, it queries the server for your username and password.

It is a method for updating files by making one change in a single
location rather than having to update individual files on each client
machine.

Do not use it over the internet. I would suggest using it only behind a
firewall.
