¿does it really?  I never touched anything with Debian2.0 and kernel 2.0.34
and my Iomega Zip (IDE ATAPI) works just fine.
Remember that to mount it with a DOS/windoze filesystem (secondary slave):
mount -t vfat /dev/hdd4 /mnt
                      ^
whereas for a Linux ext2 filesystem disk:
mount -t ext2 /dev/hdd1 /mnt
                      ^
