Which is the earliest kernel that will work with 3-Com
   3c905B cards?

do you really need earliest? what about latest?

nevertheless, it works for me in 2.0.36, compiled as module
3c59x.0

And is there any documentation on the Net that
tells which kernels support which hardware? ...trying to help
a schoolteacher get his network going here.

Oh, and also, which modules need to be compiled into the
kernel--modules that don't come with the distribution kernel--to
make a Linux server serve Windows clients?

samba? but it's separate from kernel package

   Thanks!
