    The theory is that anything that the system installs goes into /usr and
anything you install goes into /usr/local.  That way only things which are
machine dependant and/or hard to replace are in /usr/local.

    Unless, of course, you're using FreeBSD.  In which case only what they
decide as the "base" OS goes into /usr and everything else, even if it is a
"package" that you install, goes into /usr/local.  :/
