Development versions may have new stuff which can break, although some of
them have proved to be very stable. When Linus feels that the current
development kernel is 'ready', he releases it as a 'stable' version. At
that point, the only changes allowed are bug fixes (it's not quite that
simple, however0.

If the second number is even, it's stable; if it's odd it's development.

2.2.x = stable

Different compression methods. bzip2 is newer and compressed more
tightly.

These are before 2.0.36, although an ftp listing may show them later.

Likewise. The last 2.1 kernel was 2.1.132.
