In hamm, xmkmf is in the xlib6g-dev package.  The preferred way to
install anything in debian is to see if there is a debian package and
use that.  If there is none, you can compile it yourself and install it
in either your own account (~/bin, ~/lib, ~/man, etc), or in
/usr/local/bin, etc.  In neither place the debian package system will
interfere with the installed files.
