CVS problems

A bit of a CVS problem:

[12:02am] hamish:~/tmp> setenv CVSROOT :pserver:hamish@localhost:/path
[12:02am] hamish@yodeller:~/tmp> cvs login
(Logging in to hamish@localhost)
CVS password:
[12:02am] hamish@yodeller:~/tmp> cvs checkout test
cvs server: cannot open /root/.cvsignore: Permission denied
cvs [server aborted]: can't chdir(/root): Permission denied
[12:02am] hamish@yodeller:~/tmp>

I get similar messages on WinCVS trying to list modules. :-(

1.9.29 from slink.

Any ideas?

thanks,
Hamish
