There are two ways of starting X: the script startx or xdm.

X itself is a little wrapper program that runs the correct X server for
your video card.  You need to install the correct Xserver package; at the
least you should install vgaserver and svgaserver (vgaserver contains the
XF86Setup program which you need to configure X).

The server installation script asks whether it is to be made the default;
the choice of default can be altered later by installing a replacement
or by editing /etc/X11/Xserver.
