help! apt upgrade breaks everything

Hi,
I left my machine doing apt-get upgrade, and now I have tonnes of pages of
errors like -

dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
trying to overwrite `/usr/man/man8', which is also in package passwd
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
trying to overwrite `/usr/man/man8', which is also in package libpaperg
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
trying to overwrite `/usr/man/man8', which is also in package procps
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
trying to overwrite `/usr/man/man8', which is also in package wu-ftpd-academ

And xbase, xlib6g, and xlib6g-dev among others are listed as "not yet
configured". xbase and xlib6g claim to depend upon each other when i try to
dpkg --configure them. And if I try to install them with dpkg -i I get the same
errors.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Timothy
PS: Why is xbase_3.3.2.3a-6 100K and my old xbase_3.3.2.3a-1 2.1MB?
