modprobe error

I added sound to my /etc/modules file so it would load at boot time, but I
get this error:
modprobe: no dependency information for module:
  "/lib/modules/2.0.34/misc/sound.o"

I've done a make modules and modules_install as well as install when I
compiled my kernel. I even tried it by itself. When I did a make
modules_install though, I noticed that it didn't appear to look at the
sound module, but I could be wrong. Can anyone help me out?
